STAFF

The staff of Saint Teresa of Avila Parish follows a “servant-leader” model of ministry. After all, if the parish is imbued with a “radical horizontal inclusivity,” the staff is radically and horizontally inclusive.

Father Gregory Houck, O.Carm. has been the pastor since November of 2023. He prefers being called “Greg” or “Father Greg.” He loves to read, to exercise, and to listen to classical chamber music. His favorite scripture passage: “to know the length and breadth and height and depth of Christ’s love” (Ephesians 3:14).

Father Michael Kweicien, O.Carm. handles all baptismal preparation, marriage preparation, and annulments; as well as all liturgy matters. He prefers being called “Father Mike.” He loves the Chicago Cubs and basically all sports, and is the best cook in San Francisco.

Brother David Semmens, O.Carm. is the newest member of the staff. He coordinates social outreach, social concerns, and societal education in the parish. He loves early quiet mornings to view the stars and ponder the deeper questions. His favorite scripture is “to do justice, love goodness, and walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).

Laura Flaviani-Diaz is the Director of Music here, and Director of the Choir. She also directs music at the University of San Francisco and at Bishop Riordan High School. She enjoys lively liturgies; she enjoys USC football (her Alma Mater); and homemade Mexican food. Her favorite scripture: “we want Barabbas, not this one” (John 18:40).

Anarose Schelstrate is the official DRE (Director of Religious Education) of the parish which encompases just about everything: Sunday School, adult catechumentate (OCIA), Lent Soup Suppers, annual Craft Faire, and the annual “tea party.” He loves her new grandson (yes, her first). Her favorite scripture passage is “Hallelujah” (Rev 19:6).

Joel Gile is the Office Manager, Business Manager, and Building and Grounds Manager. A lifelong native of San Francisco, he knows the best out-of-the-way restaurants and coffeehouses. His favorite scripture passage, “The Word of the Lord came to Joel” (Joel 1:1).

Francisco Ochoa wears a number of hats: custodian, and safety officer, but he shines with I.T., handling the parish website and social media. He is an avid sports fan, especially for the Giants and the 49ers. His favorite scripture passage, “no razor has ever been used on my head” (Judges 16:17).

Father Brian Henden, O.Carm. is the full-time Catholic chaplain at San Francisco General Hospital but he calls Saint Teresa’s home. He is an avid sports fan, especially for any Los Angeles team (yes, he is L.A. born and raised) and has an encyclopedia memory for sports trivia. His favorite scripture: “I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.”(Hosea 11:4).
